What It Is

Limosilactobacillus reuteri is a probiotic species of beneficial bacteria found naturally in the human body. It is best known for producing reuterin, a broad spectrum natural antimicrobial compound that helps keep competing bacteria in check. LR08 is one specific strain of that species.

What Research Suggests

Research on the LR08 strain specifically

1.     Randomized human trial. A randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled trial in 48 healthy adults over 8 weeks confirmed the genomic safety of LR08, with no pathogenicity genes identified. Compared with placebo, LR08 significantly increased salivary IgA (P=0.039) and IgM (P=0.029), markers associated with the mouth's natural immune defenses, and improved gut microbiota diversity. 2.     Laboratory characterization. Research on LR08 has characterized the traits that underpin probiotic function: adhesion to surfaces, auto aggregation, biofilm formation, and the ability to outcompete other bacteria through organic acid production. Food Chemistry, 2024

Research on the Limosilactobacillus reuteri species (other strains, not LR08)

The studies below used different L. reuteri strains. They describe what the species has been studied for and are included as context, not as direct evidence for LR08.

1.     Systematic review, gum health. A 2023 systematic review found that L. reuteri consistently improves gum health measures, including gingival index, bleeding on probing and pocket depth, when used alongside professional dental care. Bonifacio et al., 2023, Microorganisms

2.     Randomized trial, 178 preschoolers. Children given L. reuteri lozenges showed significantly reduced mutans streptococci, the bacteria most associated with acid production in the mouth (P<0.001). Alamoudi et al., 2018, Journal of Clinical Pediatric Dentistry

What This Means

LR08 is a well-tolerated probiotic strain whose strongest direct evidence relates to immune markers and microbiome diversity rather than to gum or breath endpoints. The broader Limosilactobacillus reuteri species has a substantial body of oral research behind it, but that work used different strains and should not be read as evidence for LR08 specifically.
