Lacticaseibacillus paracasei Lpc-37® (formerly classified as Lactobacillus paracasei) Evidence & Research

Lpc-37® is a specific probiotic strain of Lacticaseibacillus paracasei, a species of beneficial bacteria studied across oral, digestive, and microbiome research.

Within Evena, Lpc-37® is a supporting strain. Emerging strain-specific research suggests it may influence microbial balance and oral inflammation, while broader L. paracasei research provides additional context for its potential role in oral health.

Designed to:

Support microbial balance and complement Evena’s oral-targeted probiotic strains.

What Research Suggests

A 2025 study specifically investigated Lpc-37® in an animal model of oral inflammation. Researchers found that Lpc-37® altered microbial communities across the oral-gastric-intestinal axis, increased bacteria associated with butyrate production, and was associated with reduced oral inflammation.

This is promising strain-specific research, but it was conducted in animals and should not be interpreted as proof of the same effect in humans.

Broader human research on L. paracasei provides additional oral-health context, although these studies used strains other than Lpc-37®.

A 2025 systematic review of oral probiotic studies found improvements in plaque and bleeding measures overall, with L. paracasei strains showing particularly consistent results across the studies reviewed.

Because probiotic effects can be strain-specific, these findings should be considered supporting evidence for the species rather than direct clinical evidence for Lpc-37®.

A randomized clinical trial involving 122 children studied a different L. paracasei strain, SD1, for six months. Children receiving the probiotic had significantly lower levels of mutans streptococci, bacteria strongly associated with dental acid production.

Because this study used strain SD1 rather than Lpc-37®, it demonstrates the oral-health potential of the broader L. paracasei species but is not direct evidence for Lpc-37®.

Lpc-37® itself has been studied in more than 300 adults across two randomized, placebo-controlled trials. These studies evaluated stress-related outcomes rather than oral health and did not meet their primary efficacy endpoints.

However, adverse events were similar between Lpc-37® and placebo, providing useful human safety and tolerability data for this specific strain.

Lpc-37® has also undergone strain-specific safety evaluation, including antibiotic susceptibility, genomic risk factors, and toxicity testing.

The FDA issued a “no questions” response to GRAS Notice No. 736 for Lpc-37® for specified food uses, including chewing gum. This does not constitute FDA approval of health-benefit claims.

What This Means

Lpc-37® has a more emerging oral-health evidence base than Evena’s primary oral-targeted strains. There is not yet a published human clinical trial demonstrating an oral-health benefit from Lpc-37® specifically, and we think that distinction is important.

What the evidence does show is promising strain-specific research involving the oral microbiome and inflammation, broader human oral-health research on other L. paracasei strains, and a substantial human safety and tolerability record for Lpc-37® itself.

For that reason, we view Lpc-37® as a supporting microbiome strain rather than one of Evena’s primary oral-outcome strains.

Evena’s Use of Lpc-37®

Evena includes Lpc-37® to broaden the microbial diversity of its multi-strain probiotic system and complement strains with more direct human evidence for breath, plaque, and gingival outcomes.*

Its role is intentionally supportive, adding another well-characterized beneficial organism to Evena’s broader microbiome-focused approach.
