What Research Suggests

A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial in 80 adults found that eight weeks of W. cibaria CMU significantly reduced total volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs), which are closely associated with bad breath. It also improved investigator-rated breath odor, self-reported breath improvement, gingival index, and bleeding on probing compared with placebo.

A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study in 100 adults found that W. cibaria CMU improved self-reported bad breath and reduced hydrogen sulfide and methyl mercaptan, two major odor-producing sulfur compounds, after eight weeks. Researchers also confirmed increased levels of W. cibaria in the mouth during supplementation.

Another randomized clinical trial in 92 adults found significant improvements in investigator-rated breath odor and volatile sulfur compounds after four weeks of W. cibaria CMU supplementation, with significant self-reported breath improvement by week eight.

Human research has also shown potential gingival benefits. In an eight-week randomized study, bleeding on probing improved more in the W. cibaria CMU group, and researchers observed significant changes in Fusobacterium nucleatum, a bacterium associated with periodontal biofilms and oral malodor. Plaque index and probing depth did not significantly differ between groups.

Laboratory comparisons found that W. cibaria CMU produced more hydrogen peroxide and less acid than four other commercial oral probiotic strains tested.

This does not mean OraCMU™ produces no acid. Rather, the research supports a comparatively low-acid, high-hydrogen-peroxide metabolic profile.

Mechanistic research also shows that hydrogen peroxide contributes directly to OraCMU™’s antimicrobial activity. When researchers added catalase, an enzyme that breaks down hydrogen peroxide, the inhibitory effect against Fusobacterium nucleatum disappeared.
